Umaniwear is a brand that was born from the desire to demolish today’s social and cultural divides that we are told are fixed: north-south, local-foreign, known-unknown. Every step of our brand’s development is part of an activist approach.

Umaniwear’s identity is based on two characteristics. The first one is “One collection = One country”. Each collection represents an intense preliminary work where travels and encounters lead us to the most representative textiles of our partner country. The second component of our DNA is the use of minimalistic designs for the textile to stand out as the central element of each piece.

Many forms of art are functional. Some arts we live in, some arts we eat, and some arts we wear. Textiles are one of the oldest forms of art practiced by many cultures. Perhaps no one, however, has appreciated the art of textiles quite as long as the Chinese. Chinese textiles have a deep history in Asian culture and are amongst the most powerful forces in human history. This is why China is at the heart of our first Capsule Collection.

We believe in Slow Fashion and the values that it expresses. Everything we produce is Made in Paris. The conceptualisation and prototyping of the Capsule Collection is made in collaboration with a workshop located in the heart of Paris. This allows us to ensure that our requirements in terms of quality are respected throughout all of the production process.

We rethink the value chain in a horizontal way: we treat suppliers like equal partners. We work with noble textiles that we source in the country of our Capsule Collection. The design of each collection is the produce of a long collaboration on the field where raw materials are transformed. As such, we promote quality craftsmanship in the countries that our textiles are sourced.

Every piece is hand made in our workshop. Our know how is rooted in the Sentier. The Sentier refers to a neighbourhood in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris which is known as the multicultural textile and garment manufacturing district. Since the 19th century, Sentier is the center of the textile industry in France.

We work with a small fashion workshop Rue Saint-Denis that is specialised in niche and high-end productions. The entire creation process of our Capsule Collection is done in the atelier in collaboration with a team of experienced stylists and tailors.

Our story

Salomé Martin-Darras & Louis Falga are the founders of Umaniwear.

Born French, Salomé grew up between Zimbabwe, Italy, China and Senegal. Nourished by travels and various cultural influences since her youngest age, she began painting early on and became sensitive to art. During her youth, Salomé developed a passion for Chinese art and culture. She began drawing her first clothes and getting them made by a tailor in the hutongs (胡同: alleys formed by lines of siheyuan, traditional Chinese courtyards) at the age of 15. She came back to Europe for her studies and graduated from the London School of Economics. Salomé joined Google where she was in charge of developing small and medium businesses. She moved to Paris in October 2017 to create Umaniwear.

Louis Falga started working with Salomé since day one. Born in Paris, he spent his childhood in London, Marseille and Beijing. He was fascinated by the permanent frenzy of Beijing, its extreme contrasts and extravagances. At the time, this environment sharpened his creativity and Louis came up with numerous business ideas. After his undergraduate studies, Louis undertook a Masters in Finance. He moved to Milan in 2016 where he was a portfolio manager in an asset management firm. From Milan, Louis helped Salomé in all her endeavours. In the Spring of 2018 he joined the entrepreneurial adventure, convinced that for-profit organizations can be a powerful vector of positive change.
